Breaking The Law! Breaking The Law!

...so sang Judas Priest back in 1980.
.
And so will we come January 1.
.
That's the day when a new law takes effect that makes it a ticketable offense to sport a license plate frame that covers the word "Arizona". The complete article can be read here:
.
Law targets license plate frames that obscure "Arizona"
.
These plate frames are everywhere. They advertise the driver's favorite sports team, the college he attended, his military affiliation, or the name of his favorite mega-church. And still others proclaim that their car "stops at all garage sales" or lament that they'd "rather be shopping at Nordstrom". Apparently those of us who shop at all the in-between places don't care to advertise.
.
But the overwhelming majority of plate frames advertise the dealership where the driver bought his car. Apparently people don't mind being rolling billboards for a car lot.

Our license plate frame falls into a gray area. While the "Arizona" in the plate is covered up, it is covered up with another "Arizona".

So, will we remove it? I'm not sure yet. On one hand, I'd definitely like to avoid a $135 fine. But on the other hand, I can't stand that our rights are slowly being chipped into oblivian. And this is a prime example of that.

On my drive in today, more than half the cars I spotted had some sort of license plate frame. That's a LOT of traffic stops. I wish ADOT luck in enforcing this new law.

What in gay hell is up with that stupid law??? I have always thought the Arizona license plates are very beautiful...but I know they are Arizona without having to see the state name.

In Illinois, we got new plates probably 6 years ago. They moved the yearly sticker from the bottom to the top right of the plate. The only problem, all of the plate frames (mainly from dealerships) have a little cutout on the bottom for the old stickers. On my plates, over half of the sticker is covered by the frame. Of course I always laugh when I see people still putting the stickers in the bottom (or the 1 I saw that had the sticker in the very middle of the plate) because the frame covers the place it goes.

Well, not everyone is as smart is us, Craig. There are a lot of idiots out there...many of whom live here.

So, did your wackjob governor pick out the new plates? It wouldn't surprise me

That is soo stupid! And typical! Let's not worry about minor stuff like the economy and jobs, let's make sure we get people for their plate frames! I wonder how much time and money was wasted on this majorly important issue in the government offices?

You know, even though he is a democrat, I didn't vote for him. More to the point, he is a Chicago democrat. They aren't known for their high morals. The whole time he has been the governor, he has never lived in Springfield (the state capitol) he lived 3 hours away in Chicago. That always ticked me off. He also has been bad about withholding money to various organizations, schools, state parks, etc. He had recently announced that they were going to close down over half of the state parks to save money. He was going to start moving state agencies out of Springfield into other towns. All of these are now in limbo. And of course, everybody is asking for his impeachment, and he won't give up. Oh, what a great state we live in. I think the best part, they were getting ready to ask Bush to pardon the last governor who is in prison. With the latest governor doing this, I don't think anybody wants the other one out of prison yet.
